SOA Gartner Summit 2008 Review, Tokyo – Platforms aren’t what they used to be
Posted by Joerg Klueckmann on Jul 21, 2008
I am at the Gartner SOA Summit in Tokyo in the Session held by Mr. Phifer from Gartner. He is talking about the application platform trends of the next years. Here is his message in a few sentences: Good times in economy are over for a while. IT budgets are being cut. Focus is on cost savings. Cloud computing and virtualization should help to lower the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) and that’s about it for the trend of the next years.

Many analysts and customers wonder how Microsoft’s SOA strategy will evolve in the coming months and years. I cannot tell you how Microsoft’s implementation of SOA will look like in general, but I would like to share some details with you concerning the combined SOA approach of Microsoft and IDS Scheer.
What is SOA?

If I am not live blogging from ARIS ProcessWorld, you can find me at the SOA booth in the exhibition area, where we demo our SOA product. It seems the interest in SOA is growing. Many people are passing by who have read about it and who want to see what’s behind. One common question is about a very short introduction to SOA. So let’s try that here as well…

Today, the amount of hybrid products is increasing. Hybrid products consist on one hand of a physical good like a wind mill and on the other hand of services around the physical good. I am currently at the 11th Business Information Systems (BIS) conference in Innsbruck, Austria. Innsbruck is a small town in the middle of the European Alps surrounded by massive mountains of more than 2.500m. It is a nice scenery for such a conference. The BIS conference is one of the leading international events for scientific work on business process management (BPM), enterprise modelling and architecture (EA), and service oriented architectures (SOA).

Today Business Integration Forum in Wiesbaden started with a keynote from Dr. Martin. An interesting chapter of his presentation was the result of the ‘SOA Check 2008’ survey. 60 companies in Germany where asked about the maturity and structure of their SOA strategies. Here just some findings, which were interesting to me.

The upcoming ARIS Business Performance Edition release will also ship a new version of ARIS SOA Architect. The product was extended heavily compared to the previous version. The old version included many features to design and implement executable business processes. The most important feature of the old version is the automated EPC to BPEL transformation generating an executable process out of a business process. Those features are of course preserved and extended in the new version, but there is much more to discover!
